'Look No Goals!': A Sufficient Model of Simple Algebra Problem Solving Without Explicit Goal Representation

چکیده

Theories of cognitive control suggest that goal representation is both amodal and specialized. The GLAM-PS (Glamorgan Problem Solver) Cognitive Architecture has no specialised goal representation or goal handling. In addition, GLAM-PS, a distributed production system theory, does not use amodal representation (it is an embodied/grounded architecture). The current paper demonstrates that it is, nevertheless, possible to model ‘off-line’ and abstract problem solving within GLAMPS. A model of linear equation solving is presented. The processes used by the model to solve equations are described in detail, with a particular focus on the way control of thought and action is achieved. Instead of goals, the model’s problem solving is guided by the use of naturally occurring control states derived from existing internal and external representations. The conclusion that specialized goal representation isn’t needed may also apply to architectures using amodal as well as modal representation (e.g. J. R. Anderson’s ACT-r, 2007).

bstract eople are active participants in the world with purposes nd goals they want to attain, especially in a didactic conext where learners are interacting with distant teachng/learning environments. In this paper, we describe an xperimental validation for the explicit introduction of oals into our knowledge representation model. Here, the erm ‘goal’ refers to a mental representation of an in...

Lexicographic goal programming approach for portfolio optimization

This paper will investigate the optimum portfolio for an investor, taking into account 5 criteria. The mean variance model of portfolio optimization that was introduced by Markowitz includes two objective functions; these two criteria, risk and return do not encompass all of the information about investment; information like annual dividends, S&P star ranking and return in later years which is ...

Data-driven Backward Chaining

CLIPS cannot effectively perform sound and complete logical inference in most real-world contexts. The problem facing CLIPS is its lack of goal generation. Without automatic goal generation and maintenance, Forward chaining can only deduce all instances of a relationship. Backward chaining, which requires goal generation, allows deduction of only that subset of what is logically true which is a...

Quadratic bi-level programming problems: a fuzzy goal programming approach

This paper presents a fuzzy goal programming (FGP) methodology for solving bi-level quadratic programming (BLQP) problems. In the FGP model formulation, firstly the objectives are transformed into fuzzy goals (membership functions) by means of assigning an aspiration level to each of them, and suitable membership function is defined for each objectives, and also the membership functions for vec...

Deductive Planning with Inductive Loops

Agents plan to achieve and maintain goals. Maintenance that requires continuous action excludes the representation of plans as finite sequences of actions. If there is no upper bound on the number of actions, a simple list of actions would be infinitely long. Instead, a compact representation requires some form of looping construct. We look at a specific temporally extended maintenance goal, mu...
